Lunar Lunacy or Intuitive Insight?

Understanding the Energetic Shifts Your Animal May Feel

The full moon has captivated humans for millennia—guiding tides, rituals, and emotions. But have you ever noticed your animal acting out of character during the full moon? More restless than usual? Extra sensitive? You’re not imagining it.

Just like us, animals are deeply connected to natural rhythms. The lunar cycle, especially the full moon, can have a profound effect on their emotional, physical, and energetic wellbeing. In my years as an Animal Kinesiologist, I’ve observed a consistent pattern: animals become more energetically “charged” during this time, and their behaviour reflects that shift.

Let’s explore how the full moon may affect your animal—and what you can do to help them navigate it with more ease.

  1. Heightened Sensitivity to Energy

The full moon amplifies energy, and animals—being intuitive and energetically attuned beings—often feel this increase more intensely than we do. Some animals may become extra clingy or reactive, while others withdraw and seek solitude.

Your animal might pick up on subtle energetic changes in the environment or in you. If you’re feeling more emotional or tired around the full moon, they’re likely absorbing and mirroring those shifts. Their nervous system, like yours, is trying to process the energetic “noise” that’s turned up to full volume during this time.

    2. Disrupted Sleep and Restlessness

Just like humans, animals may experience disrupted sleep patterns during a full moon. You might notice your dog pacing in the middle of the night, your cat being more vocal, or your horse appearing more alert than usual in the paddock.

The light of the full moon combined with heightened energetic frequencies can interfere with melatonin production, causing sleep disturbances and restlessness. Sensitive animals may even experience more vivid dreaming or feel more “wired” at night.

    3. Emotional Release or Reactivity

The full moon is a time of release—and that includes emotional energy. You might see your animal display more intense emotions or behavioural outbursts around the full moon.

Behaviours that normally feel manageable might suddenly feel amplified. Anxious dogs may bark more, reactive horses may spook more easily, or once-settled animals may act unsettled and unpredictable. These reactions aren’t “bad behaviour”—they’re signals. The full moon often brings underlying emotions closer to the surface, making them more visible (and more ready to be healed).

    4. Physical Symptoms and Digestive Upset

Because animals process energy through the body, shifts in lunar energy can also affect their physical state. Some animals may go off their food for a day or two, while others become ravenous. You may notice loose stools, more frequent urination, or a general sense of physical discomfort.

In energy medicine, we see digestion not only as a physical process but as an emotional one too. A full moon might stir up unprocessed emotions or energetic congestion in the solar plexus chakra, leading to digestive sensitivity.

    5. Mirroring Your Emotions

One of the most fascinating aspects of animal behaviour during a full moon is the way they mirror what’s going on in you. If you’re experiencing overwhelm, heightened emotion, insomnia, or reactivity, chances are your animal is picking up on it—and reflecting it back.

This is where the human-animal bond becomes a beautiful tool for awareness and healing. Your animal is not just affected by the moon; they’re also responding to your energy during this time. Full moons can be intense periods of energetic mirroring—offering us a chance to pause, reflect, and co-regulate with our animals.

Supporting Your Animal During the Full Moon

So how can you support your animal when full moon energy feels overwhelming?

🌿 Grounding – Gentle outdoor time, walking barefoot (if safe), or simply lying on the earth with your animal can help them release excess energy and return to balance.

🌿 Calm, predictable routines – Stick to your usual schedule where possible, and avoid overstimulation. Create a quiet, safe space for them to retreat.

🌿 Flower or crystal essences – Vibrational remedies can gently ease emotional and energetic overwhelm. My upcoming range of chakra essences for animals will include formulas specially designed to bring grounding and emotional clarity during moon phases.

🌿 Self-awareness – The best thing you can do? Regulate your own energy. Animals are energetic sponges. The calmer and more grounded you are, the safer they will feel in your presence.

    Final Thoughts

The full moon is not something to fear—it’s a powerful teacher, bringing clarity and opportunities to release what’s no longer serving us. For animals, these energetic shifts can feel confusing or intense, but with your awareness and support, they don’t have to be distressing.

Tune in. Observe. Support. And let this lunar phase be a reminder of the beautiful, energetic bond you share with your animal. Together, you can ride the waves of the full moon with grace and healing.
